Adelphi Class 12-31-17 Rethinking the Crucifixion, continued

Henry Stevenson gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/250160063
Allen  begins with a discussion of the Biblical model of what prevents us from  being “royal priests”. What does W. T. Wright say about this? Next,  what about breaking the concept of idols? And, what about the Biblical  meaning of atonement? Allen gives a personal testimonial to explain the  lesson. Has the church’s diagnosis of our problems been correct? Allen  gives more examples from N. T. Wright https://vimeo.com/250160777

Adelphi Class 1-7-18 Rethinking the Crucifixion, continued

Henry Stevenson gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/250160063
Allen  begins with a discussion of the Biblical model of what prevents us from  being “royal priests”. What does W. T. Wright say about this? Next,  what about breaking the concept of idols? Adelphi Class 1-14-17 Rethinking the Crucifixion, continued

Adlonia Broussard gives the opening prayer https://vimeo.com/252259457

The  question of the cross and the crucifixion has been debated for  centuries. Allen compares "popular" theology with the opinion of N.T.  Wright. Which view is correct, "sin" or "idolatry"? Wright suggests that  there is a difference between "works" and "vocation". Who should  benefit from the way we live? Allen has the answer. Why have the words  "Priest" and "Priesthood" become negative? Why should we maintain  respect for the office? Next, how does the Royal Priesthood compare to  the experience in the Garden of Eden? How does today's society define or  regard sin?  A class member suggests that churches don't talk about sin  because they want people to be happy. What is the sin of idolatry?  Next, a discussion of the first three chapters from Paul in Romans 1-3.  What happened between 529 B.C. and 135 A.D.? You'll want to stop the  video and read the text of Allen's lesson. What was the most important  Jewish celebration? How does that relate to Jesus' ministry? Next, why  was it difficult for the early church to explain the life of Jesus?  Next, Allen reviews the study of Exodus from his lesson "Moses, the  Reluctant Prophet". What changed in the Temple? Moving forward, why is  the Holy Spirit sometimes absent from many of today's churches? What can  WE do about this?

https://vimeo.com/251735707

                                       2. N. T. Wright, "The Day the Revolution Began"

Adelphi Class Jan 21, 2018
The Day the Revolution Began
Billie Strickland gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/252214819
Allen  begins a new lesson series based on the writings of N. T. Wright. Allen  gives a list of Biblical stories, starting with the Garden of Eden.  What would happen if certain “stories” were taken out of the Bible? A  class member asks what would have happened if Adam and Eve had never  sinned? Next, when did the persecution of the Jews begin? And, who were  the first three kings? Allen ties the stories together in a compelling  way. Allen asks us some questions about these stories. What is YOUR  answer? Next, Allen gives specific history notes and a map of the  northern and southern kingdoms. Next, Allen discusses the Maccabean  revolt in 167 B.C. Next, Deuteronomy 30: 15-20.

The Day the Revolution Began, continued

Richard Cardenas gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/253312043
Allen  begins in Genesis 3:22-24. Allen highlights a particular word in the  scripture. Next, was the world created for BOTH the created and the  creator? How are the sins of today different from Biblical times? Next,  Psalm 72:5-7 and Psalm 132:13-18, which seemed to promise a wonderful  future. Next, 2 Samuel 7:11-13. In this scripture, what does “house”  mean? Allen gives us a very interesting sequence. Next, 1 Kings 8:1-3.  Next, verses from Isaiah. Did God ever come back to Solomon’s temple?  Next, what did the early Christians say about the return of the Devine  Presence? What about the forgiveness of sin? How were the thoughts of  early Christians revolutionary? Why is N. T. Wright’s interpretation so  important? https://vimeo.com/253312321

Adelphi Class Feb 4, 2018

Guest teacher, Andy Nixon

Donny Martin gives the opening prayer https://vimeo.com/254339440

Andy Nixon, guest teacher  https://vimeo.com/254341449

Class  member Ross Kroll did some research for us:  N.T. Wright, “the renowned  scholar, Anglican bishop, and bestselling author widely considered to  be the heir to C. S. Lewis contemplates the central event at the heart  of the Christian faith—Jesus’ crucifixion—arguing that the Protestant  Reformation did not go far enough in transforming our understanding of  its meaning.
In The Day the Revolution Began, N. T. Wright once again  challenges commonly held Christian beliefs as he did in his  acclaimed Surprised by Hope. Demonstrating the rigorous intellect and  breathtaking knowledge that have long defined his work, Wright argues  that Jesus’ death on the cross was not only to absolve us of our sins;  it was actually the beginning of a revolution commissioning the  Christian faithful to a new vocation—a royal priesthood responsible for  restoring and reconciling all of God’s creation.
Wright argues that  Jesus’ crucifixion must be understood within the much larger story of  God’s purposes to bring heaven and earth together. The Day the  Revolution Began offers a grand picture of Jesus’ sacrifice and its full  significance for the Christian faith, inspiring believers with a  renewed sense of mission, purpose, and hope, and reminding them of the  crucial role the Christian faith must play in protecting and shaping the  future of the world.”

Allen  is still teaching from a book by N.T. Wright. Allen begins with  Lamentations written by Jeremiah. Allen explains several passages from  the scripture. Next, Isaiah 40:12. How many different people wrote  Isaiah? Next, Jeremiah 31. Now back to Isaiah 52. How do these verses  help those who are in captivity? Is this a new exodus? What was the  difference between the first and second Exodus? Next, a discussion of  which “chapters” of Daniel Jesus and his followers used. How did these  visions change? How were the prophecies different for Jews and  Christians?  https://vimeo.com/255615983

Suffering, Redemption and Love -  N.T. Wright, continued

Craig Lamb gives the opening prayer.  https://vimeo.com/256437824
Allen  begins with a review of Daniel and an extended exile. How many weeks  did this last? Which people saw Syria as the adversary? Who saw Rome as  the adversary? Next, what does Daniel 12:1 mean? Allen shows us maps of  the Syrian empire in 824 BC and 671 BC. Next, a map of the Babylonian  empire. How were the Jews treated differently by the Syrians and The  Babylonians? Next, a map of Alexander’s empire. Allen’s point is the  Jews had to deal with cultural and religious intrusions from several  empires YET they survived and continue to survive. Next, readings from  Maccabees. What does “Maccabees” mean? Next, Allen gives some personal  experiences to explain the lesson. Back to Deuteronomy and how God loves  us. Next, several passages from Isaiah. Remember, all the nations shown  in Allen’s ancient maps are gone - except Israel. What does this mean  for Israel, and why?  https://vimeo.com/256438007

Next, what  was the real message Jesus intended when he condemned the fig tree?  Next, why did Jesus choose these events during Passover week? Next,  Allen discusses The Last Supper. When did the Last Supper actually  occur? Allen uses scripture from Luke, Matthew, Mark and I Corinthians.  This covers the end of Jesus’ ministry, but what about the beginning?  Allen’s says that Galatians was the first Christian writing. What was  Jesus vocation?  https://vimeo.com/260838743

Next, when was the  symbolism of Palm Sunday explained? What about the donkey, the cloaks in  the road and the palm branches? Next, Mark 6. What did Jesus have to go  through in order to die? Allen shows us the different treatment of  Jesus in his home and in other areas. Next, the Rejection according to  Luke. Why use examples of the widow in Sidon and Naaman in Syria? Next,  Allen discusses the existence of evil. He addresses the fact that some  scholars say Jesus was “outside” of history. Next, Psalm 105 and 106.  How were these two Palms different? Allen  reminds us of how N T Wright is able to change our understanding of  Jesus. https://vimeo.com/262089057

Adelphi Class April 1, 2018  The Day the Revolution Began by N.T. Wright, continued
Henry Stevenson gives the opening prayer.   https://vimeo.com/263008498
Allen  says we must agree that after the resurrection, everything  changed. What started the "Revolution", Jesus' death OR his  resurrection? What did first century people believe? Next, who composed  the early church? In today's world, what do we preach on Easter Sunday,  knowing many people only come to church once or twice yearly? Next, what  about  Pilate's description: "The King of the Jews"? Then, Allen  digresses from his outline. You'll want to hear his "extra" comments.  Next, John 11 and the concept of sacrificial death. Allen fast forwards  in his presentation, but you can pause the video to read his notes.  Allen reviews the different calendars that were used to time the events  of Holy Week. How did the Jews time their days? (This is important to  understand the timing of the Holy Week events.)  Allen fast forwards to  John.  Allen asks, "How will YOU repay Jesus for what He did for you?" https://vimeo.com/263008881

                              3. What we have learned, and where you want to go

Adelphi Class April 8, 2018
What we have learned and where you want to go. (9-1-2007 to 8-31-2018)
Henry Stevenson gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/264125396
Allen  gives us a review of his lessons since 2007. We have studied EVERY book  of the Bible except Leviticus in over 600 lessons! Allen asks the class  to respond to some troubling questions, which you can see on the  screen. You’ll want to listen to the class comments. One member reminds  us that the key to Allen's question about describing our faith is that  Allen asks how do we speak  to NON BELIEVERS. If they DON’T believe, how  does that change things? After hearing several comments, Allen  describes the policies of the early church. Next, how do we select a  church? Next, what occurred after the revivals between 1905 and 1917?  Allen shows the creed of the Junior Chamber of Commerce (The Jaycees).  Next, Allen shows some changes in the Methodist creed.  https://vimeo.com/264125591

                                  4. How we got the Bible

Adelphi Class April 15, 2018 How we got the Bible (a video)
Guy Meaders gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/265047559
Allen  shares a video by Timothy Paul Jones. PhD called “How we got the  Bible”. What about Jesus or God’s visible presence? How do we experience  them? What does the word “Bible” mean? Dr. Jones give three truths  about what makes the Bible special. 1) Inspired - where does the Bible  come from? 2) Infallible - scripture never deceives us. 3) Sufficient -  It is all we need to know. A) Sufficient in what it provides. B)  Sufficient in how it has been preserved. What does all this mean? We can  recover what God said. Next, how can we make sure that scripture does  what it is intended to do? Interpretation and Illumination. Dr. Jones  gives us a one sentence summary. https://vimeo.com/265047729

                                  5. Studying the Bible

Adelphi Class April 22, 2018 Studying the Bible, a systematic approach
Jane Thompson gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/266170424
Allen  discusses some of the words we use in studying the Bible. He suggests  we use “systematic theology” to study the Bible. This is a “different”  way to study. What about “Assurance”, “Atonement”, or “Authority”? For  example, Allen suggests we look only for scriptures related to the Holy  Spirit. Are there ANY original Bible manuscripts? How many original  “pieces” of the Bible exist? How accurate is today’s Bible compared to  the original document? Allen gives an example of how an error can occur.  What about “free will” and “foreknowledge”? Next, Allen says the Bible  is 99% properly translated. However, Hebrew has 5,000 words, Greek  50,000 and English over 1 million words. How do these language  differences affect our Bible today? Allen concludes with a suggestion of  how to do a systematic Bible study. Next, Allen gives us examples of  how the interpretation of the Bible has changed. Allen has some closing  comments. https://vimeo.com/266170602

Adelphi Class April 29, 2018 Studying the Bible, The Holy Spirit
Roy Plaisance gives the opening prayer https://vimeo.com/267290263

Adelphi Class May 6, 2018 Studying the Bible, continued
Ben Brumlow gives the opening prayer.  https://vimeo.com/268460244
Allen  reviews his study on the Hebrew word “Ruach”, which has MANY  translations. How do we determine which translation to use? Allen gives  an example from Deuteronomy. Allen explains the root word for Ruach,  using scripture from Jeremiah, Jonah, Amos  and Genesis. Allen changes  his lesson to discuss the “spirit” translation of Ruach. We see text  from Exodus, Numbers and Judges, Next, how is the Holy Spirit of today  different from the Old Testament? Is there any example of a prayer to  the Holy Spirit anywhere in the Bible? Next, 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel.  Also, 1 Kings. How did the description of “spirit” change in the New  Testament? Next, 1 and 2 Chronicles, Nehemiah, Job and Psalms. Next,  Isaiah. A class member asks about National Prayer.  https://vimeo.com/268460371

The Work of the Holy Spirit
Ezra Charles gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/272411410
Allen  begins with Job and Isaiah to discuss the function of the Holy Spirit.  Next, what about the triune God? Why are there prayers to God and Jesus,  but none to the Holy Spirit? Next, Acts. What does the Holy Spirit do?  What does the Holy Spirit reveal? Does the Holy Spirit ever call  attention to itself? Allen has opinions about these questions. Allen  gives us three slides to read; these are ideas from John Wesley. You can  pause the video to read the slides. https://vimeo.com/272411832

Adelphi Class June 3, 2018

Lynn Larson gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/273552263
Allen  brings us an updated “old” lesson from 2009. What happened when the  Holy Spirit came down at Pentecost? What does “Speaking in Tongues”  really mean? Next, Allen talks about some beliefs concerning Jesus. How  did these beliefs affect Jesus? These include, “The Son of Man”. Allen  shows us several other comments about Jesus; some of these comments  became problems for Jesus. Next, the book of Enoch, which was written  from 250 B.C. to 50 B.C. What does Moshiach mean?   6. Allen Houk's conclusions

Adelphi Class June 10, 2018

Conclusions
Jane Thompson gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/274542130
Allen  gives us another updated “old” lesson from September 29, 2011. Allen  shows us a drawing of the relationship of between the Synoptic Gospels.  There was a document called “Q”, which is short for “writings” in  German. Allen says there is no “Q” and it was never mentioned by the  early church. Allen reviews Mark and has some comments. Allen tells us  the name the Romans gave to Jerusalem after it’s destruction. Allen  answers some questions about the process of researching and writing the  Gospels. Could Peter’s death have affected the timing of the Gospels?  Next, more information about the writing of Mark. How many languages did  Mark use? Allen shows us the uniqueness of Mark. Allen now gives us  some “conclusions “ about Mark.  https://vimeo.com/274542254

Adelphi Class June 17, 2018

Next, back to Deuteronomy 15. Next, some comments about  Giving. Next, back to Matthew and Jesus’ thoughts. What about the  lineage of Jesus ancestry? Next, some lessons from Matthew. And, what is  the significance of including women into this historical story? Next,  examples of how Jesus changed things. Allen has some comments about the  Sermon on the Mount. What DID Jesus mean (which Greek word for  love?) when he said “Love your enemies”

https://vimeo.com/275664791

Adelphi Class June 24, 2018
Conclusions, continued

Pat Hodges gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/277169448
Allen shows a map of Egypt and highlights an ancient library at Oxyrthynchos and asks us to look it up. Here's a link for you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxyrhynchus (Webmaster's  note: I took a look at this history and it is fascinating!) Next,  comments about Luke. Allen believes Luke was written about 40 A.D. How  many “preachers” did Jesus send out? Is there evidence that Luke was an  eyewitness account? Did Luke ever go to Spain? Allen gives several  scriptures in which Luke is mentioned, and also several scholars who  discuss Luke. Allen discusses how certain people have influenced the  church AND how WE can influence people today. Next, what does Theophilus  mean? Next, Allen talks about the fact that the Bible as we know it did  not exist yet. So, how where “the rules” determined? https://vimeo.com/277169688

Adelphi Class July 1, 2018

Conclusions, continued - John
Henry Stevenson gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/278038995
This  week Allen covers the Gospel of John, which has about 700 words. Why  was the language in John’s Gospel different from the other three  Gospels? Which Gospel does John use for his writing? Allen has some  comments about these writings. Did questions about the Gospels lead to  the Gnostic Gospels? What is the significance of catching 153 fish? What  about the numeric value (code) of names? Allen discusses the difference  between this Gospel and The Revelation. A class member asks about  “666”. https://vimeo.com/278039859

Allen  begins with a review from last week’s lesson on John. Allen explains  why Lazarus is not mentioned in Matthew, Mark and Luke. Next, begins our  study of 1 John, which some say is written by John the Elder. Allen  adds footnotes at the bottom of the page. Allen mentions some early  church heresies regarding “dark” and “light”. How long did it take the  church to define “atone”? Regarding The Messiah, what was the difference  in thinking between the Jews and the Pagans/Gentiles? Next, how does  John define “antichrist”? What is involved in asking for forgiveness of  our sins? Allen takes some questions from the class.  https://vimeo.com/280275782

Adelphi Class July 29, 2018
Lynn Larson gives the opening prayer.
Allen  reviews some important Christian ideas that may have contributed to the  rise of other religions, including "The Trinity" and the Divinity of  Jesus. Does the church accurately describe these ideas? Allen discusses  writings from the 7th century. Allen shows scripture about the Trinity  from James 5. Next 1 John. Allen says this is the only reference to the  Trinity in the New Testament. Why? How have the translations about the  Trinity changed over time? Allen asks why it took the early church over  600 years to define the Trinity. How did this relate to the rise of  Islam? Allen suggests that the concept of Mary as the mother of God was a  negative as related to Islamic beliefs. Allen suggests that we see this  even in modern times (for example, the Jim Jones cult). The class has  some comments and questions. Allen asks the class if we could explain  the Trinity. If Mary was the mother of God, how would we describe her  mother? Allen says we need to be able to explain Jesus (we need to KNOW  what we are talking about).  https://vimeo.com/282720177

Dr. Jim Hamilton, guest teacher -  Jesus is the Hope - Hope is the Anchor
Randy Houston gives the opening prayer https://vimeo.com/290321291
Jim  uses Romans 15:10-13 Jim says there are 129 references to Hope in his  Concordance. As believers we have something others in the world do not  have. Jim asks the class to read to read the verses out loud. You can,  too! Jim gives us some definitions of “Hope”, “Faith and Hope” ( what is  the key?). Next, Faith and Hope are complementary. Jim gives a  meaningful illustration. Next, Jim gives comments about Hope brings -  Safety, Confidence, Praise to God, Eternal Value, Strength, Joy, ... is  Infectious, ... lightens our Darkness, ... is an Anchor for the Soul,  stabilizes in the Storm, (Will we modern Christians face persecution in  our lifetime?). Next, Hope brings Faith. Jim asks us, “Where is YOUR  Hope?” What happens when you lose hope? Jim gives some important answers  to this question. https://vimeo.com/290321564

Adelphi Class Sept. 23, 2018
Rev. Brandi Horton, guest teacher The Discipline of Study
Ben Brumlow gives the opening prayer.  https://vimeo.com/291566569
Brandi  gives some statistics about how Americans spend their time, especially  religious time. Next, what is the difference between Meditation and  Study? How are they related? Brandi recommends a book “The Celebration  of Discipline” by Richard Foster. What are the steps to studying  scripture?
1. Repetition. What does repetition do to your brain?  Deuteronomy 6: 4-9 and Hebrews 10: 15-16. Have we forgotten about the  power of repetition? 2. Concentration. You won’t learn much if you  don’t concentrate. But, don’t you do many things (like morning coffee)  with “thinking” about them? Do you set a time limit on your work? (So  you remain more focused). 3. Comprehension. What does the dictionary say?  4. Reflection. This is the application of the other steps. Next, Tools for Doing Well A) Other books B) Our experiences
C) Live discussions Brandi explains these ideas.
But,  NONE of this works if you think you don’t need to learn more. Brandi  reads Philippians 4: 8-9 and takes some questions from the class.  https://vimeo.com/291566818

Adelphi Class Nov 4, 2018 Dr. Brant Wallace Ruth Chapter 3

Kathie Hughes give the opening prayer https://vimeo.com/299499268 Brant  begins with a review of Ruth, and mentions that Naomi encourages Ruth  to go to Boaz, and sleep at his feet.  Naomi is trying to seek security  for Ruth and of course, Boaz and Ruth  marry and have a son,  Obed.Brant points out one of the reasons why the Book of Ruth is  included in the Bible... because it shows the lineage of Christ!  Boaz  and Ruth had a  son,  Obed. Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was  the father of David! https://vimeo.com/299499423

Adelphi Class Nov 11, 2018 Dr. Brant Wallace, Ruth Chapter 4 “ Redemption in the Heat and Home”

Ezra Charles gives the opening prayer.  https://vimeo.com/300344072 Brant  starts with a review of Ruth. He says the message is change and  suggests we should all embrace change. The lesson says that “Redemption”  is the process of buying back something from captivity, slavery, debt  or trouble. What does “redemption” mean to you? Ruth 4 begins with a  “meeting at the gate.” Next, the elders discuss the Land. But what  happens to the “title” of this land? What are they really trying to  redeem? A class member reminds us that Ruth’s mother was NOT Jewish.  Next, what about Ruth’s inheritance? Hint: Her son Obed. This concludes  our study of Ruth. Please prepare for next week by reading Philippians  chapter 1.   https://vimeo.com/300344529

Adelphi Class Nov 18, 2018 Dr. Brant Wallace, Philippians “Life Worthy of the Gospel” Brant  describes the conditions for prisoners during this time. Philippians is  written as a response to letters gifts and information sent to Paul  while he was in prison. Life in Cesarea Philippi was busy, successful  and diverse AND loyal to Rome. This means that Paul’s teaching was  contrary to much in the city. But the church was successful because of  all the resources in the city. Look at a You Tube video: https://youtu.be/oE9qqW1-BkU  (Web master note: This is a terrific 9 minute video!) Next,  Brant asks us to read side by side different translations which can  help your understanding. Timothy would not have been in prison with  Paul. Brant pauses and asks the class, “What are you thankful for this  Thanksgiving?” Next, how does Paul’s prayer relate to today? Where does  the “good work” begin? (The answer: Salvation). Brant’s lesson has the  scripture blended with an explanation. Next, Paul notes that being in  prison has actually HELPED him spread the Gospel! The prisons were  usually next to a Roman garrison, which gave Paul more contacts. Next,  Paul’s circumstance helped believers become more confident in their own  ministry. Next, Paul addresses people who don’t like him. The key is  that we are all proclaiming Christ.  https://vimeo.com/301720526

Adelphi Class Nov 25, 2018 Dr. Jim Hamilton, Robes in the Bible (Revelation)

Pat Hodges gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/302888677

Jim  starts with a poem/song (from memory!) Next, Jim says, “God was the  first tailor.” Why? When was the first death recorded in the Bible? (Editor's note: It took a few minutes, but we found a good angle from which you can read the text.) Next,  illustrations about clothing. Then, “Robe” and “Mantle”. But, would  Jesus have worn a fine Robe? Next, Jim does discuss some fine Robes and  the Ephod described in Exodus. Next, uses several different scriptures  to tell us about Robes. What is “the long Robe of pretension”? Jim says  one of his favorite “Robe” stories is about “Restoration” (The Prodigal  Son). Next, Jim asks us, “What kind of clothes will you wear in the  presence of God?” Is righteous clothing a “quality” or “a way of life”?  Next, will YOU be clothed in a Robe of Righteousness? Jim gives us four  suggestions to achieve this. https://vimeo.com/302888854

Adelphi Class Dec 2, 2018 Dr. Brant Wallace Philippians, Life Worthy of the Gospel

Randy Houston gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/304208172

Brant  begins with a moment of silence for the passing of President George H.  W. Bush. Next, a review of Philippians and a map of Paul’s mission  journeys. We pick up with Philippians 1:15-18. How many times is the  word, “Rejoice” used? Paul refers to his detractors. You’ll want to read  Brant’s side-by-side explanation if the scripture. How does Paul  display his Boldness and Confidence? How do WE live a Bold life?  Sacrifice Submit Serve Suffer - remember these four words. Next, we  begin Chapter 2.   https://vimeo.com/304208482

Adelphi Class Dec 9, 2018 Dr. Brant Wallace, Philippians, continued

Lynn Larson gives the opening prayer  https://vimeo.com/305570627 Brant  begins with a review of Philippians. How does this relate to our  Christmas season? Brant believes that verses 5-11 in chapter 2 are a  great synopsis of the New Testament. Note: Brant’s wife and baby son  (Alison and William) are in class today! Brant notes this is one of the  few times that Paul writes poetry. In Paul’s writing is there conflict  between Heaven and Earth? Next, since Paul has been writing about  himself, he mentions sending Timothy to get current news from Philippi.   https://vimeo.com/305570790

Adelphi Class Dec 16, 2018

Dr. Brant Wallace, Philippians, continued

Judy Canon gives the opening prayer.  https://vimeo.com/306902340 Brant  reviews the history of Philippi. Next, we begin our study of chapter 3.  How often does he use the word “rejoice “? What does Paul mean by  saying, “We are the circumcision”? Paul gives his “resume” to validate  his writings. How does the legalism problem of that time relate to the  current situation for Christians? Brant uses an accounting example to  explain the text. Does righteousness come from the law or from Christ?  https://vimeo.com/306902573

Adelphi Class Dec 23, 2018 Dr. Jim Hamilton - Life is Messy: A Christmas Story - Luke 2:1-14 Cheryl O’Brian gives the opening prayer.  https://vimeo.com/308113829 What  were some traditional Jewish values at the time of Jesus’ birth? What  information is missing from the scripture? Jim tells a personal story  about a friend who says she has lost faith in Christmas. Next, a quote  from Chuck Colson. Randy Houston reads Luke 2:1-14. Next, Jim shows us  the “order” of the Christmas story. But, is life about "order", OR is it  "messy"? What do the other Gospels say about the Christmas story. Next,  what about the contemporary Political scene of those times? A lot was  left out of the Gospel. For example, how long would it take for a  pregnant woman to walk from Nazareth to Bethlehem? Jim shows an old  photo of the road. What did “Inn” really mean? So, although Jesus was  born into a “mess”, it is very important to understand that God had a  plan. What about today? Jim says that God’s message was, “I want to be  part of your mess.” What are the messes in your life? How many people  have peace in EVERY corner of their life? Answer: not many. What should  we do with our messes? Jim has a suggestion. Next, Jim discusses Henry  Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, “I heard the bells on Christmas Day”. Can  WE have peace on earth? Next the class reads some scripture with Jim.  https://vimeo.com/308113889

Adelphi Class Dec 30, 2018

Dr. Jim Hamilton The Hallel - Psalms

Ben Brumlow gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/309328960 Since this is the last Sunday of the year, Jim wants to look back at the year. Psalm  136:1-6 Jim says this is a Hebrew word for "praise , and a root word for "hallelujah". Jim says this time of year should be  a time of joyous thanksgiving. Jim goes to other scriptures to discuss  (a) the miracle of feeding the 5,000 during which Jesus gave thanks (b)  The Last Supper,  during which Jesus gave thanks (c) Raising  Lazarus, during which Jesus gave thanks. Jesus gave thanks to His  father. Do you stop to say thanks? How did the disciples (and Jesus)  sound when they sang? Jim mentions that the scriptures are silent on  several topics that we might find interesting. Psalm 136 is about praise  and was a "responsive" reading. Jim discusses the musical instruments  of Biblical times. Jim leads the class in a responsive reading of Psalm  136. Jim says this Psalm reflects many things for which the Jews where  grateful. Next, Jim shows us some Hebrew and how to read it. Jim  explains some of the Hebrew words. Jim says we should thank God not just  for what He does, but also for who He is. Our God is a God of love and  mercy. Jim says this Psalm suggests that we give God thanks even in the  bad times. How was YOUR 2018? What did God give to YOU during the last  year? How can you be thankful for 2018?  https://vimeo.com/309329678
