Adlonia Broussard gives the opening prayer https://vimeo.com/252259457
The question of the cross and the crucifixion has been debated for centuries. Allen compares "popular" theology with the opinion of N.T. Wright. Which view is correct, "sin" or "idolatry"? Wright suggests that there is a difference between "works" and "vocation". Who should benefit from the way we live? Allen has the answer. Why have the words "Priest" and "Priesthood" become negative? Why should we maintain respect for the office? Next, how does the Royal Priesthood compare to the experience in the Garden of Eden? How does today's society define or regard sin? A class member suggests that churches don't talk about sin because they want people to be happy. What is the sin of idolatry? Next, a discussion of the first three chapters from Paul in Romans 1-3. What happened between 529 B.C. and 135 A.D.? You'll want to stop the video and read the text of Allen's lesson. What was the most important Jewish celebration? How does that relate to Jesus' ministry? Next, why was it difficult for the early church to explain the life of Jesus? Next, Allen reviews the study of Exodus from his lesson "Moses, the Reluctant Prophet". What changed in the Temple? Moving forward, why is the Holy Spirit sometimes absent from many of today's churches? What can WE do about this?

Class member Ross Kroll did some research for us: N.T. Wright, “the renowned scholar, Anglican bishop, and bestselling author widely considered to be the heir to C. S. Lewis contemplates the central event at the heart of the Christian faith—Jesus’ crucifixion—arguing that the Protestant Reformation did not go far enough in transforming our understanding of its meaning.
In The Day the Revolution Began, N. T. Wright once again challenges commonly held Christian beliefs as he did in his acclaimed Surprised by Hope. Demonstrating the rigorous intellect and breathtaking knowledge that have long defined his work, Wright argues that Jesus’ death on the cross was not only to absolve us of our sins; it was actually the beginning of a revolution commissioning the Christian faithful to a new vocation—a royal priesthood responsible for restoring and reconciling all of God’s creation.
Wright argues that Jesus’ crucifixion must be understood within the much larger story of God’s purposes to bring heaven and earth together. The Day the Revolution Began offers a grand picture of Jesus’ sacrifice and its full significance for the Christian faith, inspiring believers with a renewed sense of mission, purpose, and hope, and reminding them of the crucial role the Christian faith must play in protecting and shaping the future of the world.”

Allen shares a video by Timothy Paul Jones. PhD called “How we got the Bible”. What about Jesus or God’s visible presence? How do we experience them? What does the word “Bible” mean? Dr. Jones give three truths about what makes the Bible special. 1) Inspired - where does the Bible come from? 2) Infallible - scripture never deceives us. 3) Sufficient - It is all we need to know. A) Sufficient in what it provides. B) Sufficient in how it has been preserved. What does all this mean? We can recover what God said. Next, how can we make sure that scripture does what it is intended to do? Interpretation and Illumination. Dr. Jones gives us a one sentence summary. https://vimeo.com/265047729
5. Studying the Bible
Adelphi Class April 22, 2018 Studying the Bible, a systematic approach
Jane Thompson gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/266170424
Allen discusses some of the words we use in studying the Bible. He suggests we use “systematic theology” to study the Bible. This is a “different” way to study. What about “Assurance”, “Atonement”, or “Authority”? For example, Allen suggests we look only for scriptures related to the Holy Spirit. Are there ANY original Bible manuscripts? How many original “pieces” of the Bible exist? How accurate is today’s Bible compared to the original document? Allen gives an example of how an error can occur. What about “free will” and “foreknowledge”? Next, Allen says the Bible is 99% properly translated. However, Hebrew has 5,000 words, Greek 50,000 and English over 1 million words. How do these language differences affect our Bible today? Allen concludes with a suggestion of how to do a systematic Bible study. Next, Allen gives us examples of how the interpretation of the Bible has changed. Allen has some closing comments. https://vimeo.com/266170602

Allen reviews some important Christian ideas that may have contributed to the rise of other religions, including "The Trinity" and the Divinity of Jesus. Does the church accurately describe these ideas? Allen discusses writings from the 7th century. Allen shows scripture about the Trinity from James 5. Next 1 John. Allen says this is the only reference to the Trinity in the New Testament. Why? How have the translations about the Trinity changed over time? Allen asks why it took the early church over 600 years to define the Trinity. How did this relate to the rise of Islam? Allen suggests that the concept of Mary as the mother of God was a negative as related to Islamic beliefs. Allen suggests that we see this even in modern times (for example, the Jim Jones cult). The class has some comments and questions. Allen asks the class if we could explain the Trinity. If Mary was the mother of God, how would we describe her mother? Allen says we need to be able to explain Jesus (we need to KNOW what we are talking about). https://vimeo.com/282720177

Rev. Brandi Horton, guest teacher The Discipline of Study
Ben Brumlow gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/291566569
Brandi gives some statistics about how Americans spend their time, especially religious time. Next, what is the difference between Meditation and Study? How are they related? Brandi recommends a book “The Celebration of Discipline” by Richard Foster. What are the steps to studying scripture?
1. Repetition. What does repetition do to your brain? Deuteronomy 6: 4-9 and Hebrews 10: 15-16. Have we forgotten about the power of repetition? 2. Concentration. You won’t learn much if you don’t concentrate. But, don’t you do many things (like morning coffee) with “thinking” about them? Do you set a time limit on your work? (So you remain more focused). 3. Comprehension. What does the dictionary say? 4. Reflection. This is the application of the other steps. Next, Tools for Doing Well A) Other books B) Our experiences
C) Live discussions Brandi explains these ideas.
But, NONE of this works if you think you don’t need to learn more. Brandi reads Philippians 4: 8-9 and takes some questions from the class. https://vimeo.com/291566818

Kathie Hughes give the opening prayer https://vimeo.com/299499268 Brant begins with a review of Ruth, and mentions that Naomi encourages Ruth to go to Boaz, and sleep at his feet. Naomi is trying to seek security for Ruth and of course, Boaz and Ruth marry and have a son, Obed.Brant points out one of the reasons why the Book of Ruth is included in the Bible... because it shows the lineage of Christ! Boaz and Ruth had a son, Obed. Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of David! https://vimeo.com/299499423
Adelphi Class Nov 11, 2018 Dr. Brant Wallace, Ruth Chapter 4 “ Redemption in the Heat and Home”
Ezra Charles gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/300344072 Brant starts with a review of Ruth. He says the message is change and suggests we should all embrace change. The lesson says that “Redemption” is the process of buying back something from captivity, slavery, debt or trouble. What does “redemption” mean to you? Ruth 4 begins with a “meeting at the gate.” Next, the elders discuss the Land. But what happens to the “title” of this land? What are they really trying to redeem? A class member reminds us that Ruth’s mother was NOT Jewish. Next, what about Ruth’s inheritance? Hint: Her son Obed. This concludes our study of Ruth. Please prepare for next week by reading Philippians chapter 1. https://vimeo.com/300344529
Adelphi Class Nov 18, 2018 Dr. Brant Wallace, Philippians “Life Worthy of the Gospel” Brant describes the conditions for prisoners during this time. Philippians is written as a response to letters gifts and information sent to Paul while he was in prison. Life in Cesarea Philippi was busy, successful and diverse AND loyal to Rome. This means that Paul’s teaching was contrary to much in the city. But the church was successful because of all the resources in the city. Look at a You Tube video: https://youtu.be/oE9qqW1-BkU (Web master note: This is a terrific 9 minute video!) Next, Brant asks us to read side by side different translations which can help your understanding. Timothy would not have been in prison with Paul. Brant pauses and asks the class, “What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?” Next, how does Paul’s prayer relate to today? Where does the “good work” begin? (The answer: Salvation). Brant’s lesson has the scripture blended with an explanation. Next, Paul notes that being in prison has actually HELPED him spread the Gospel! The prisons were usually next to a Roman garrison, which gave Paul more contacts. Next, Paul’s circumstance helped believers become more confident in their own ministry. Next, Paul addresses people who don’t like him. The key is that we are all proclaiming Christ. https://vimeo.com/301720526
Adelphi Class Nov 25, 2018 Dr. Jim Hamilton, Robes in the Bible (Revelation)
Pat Hodges gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/302888677
Jim starts with a poem/song (from memory!) Next, Jim says, “God was the first tailor.” Why? When was the first death recorded in the Bible? (Editor's note: It took a few minutes, but we found a good angle from which you can read the text.) Next, illustrations about clothing. Then, “Robe” and “Mantle”. But, would Jesus have worn a fine Robe? Next, Jim does discuss some fine Robes and the Ephod described in Exodus. Next, uses several different scriptures to tell us about Robes. What is “the long Robe of pretension”? Jim says one of his favorite “Robe” stories is about “Restoration” (The Prodigal Son). Next, Jim asks us, “What kind of clothes will you wear in the presence of God?” Is righteous clothing a “quality” or “a way of life”? Next, will YOU be clothed in a Robe of Righteousness? Jim gives us four suggestions to achieve this. https://vimeo.com/302888854
Adelphi Class Dec 2, 2018 Dr. Brant Wallace Philippians, Life Worthy of the Gospel
Randy Houston gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/304208172
Brant begins with a moment of silence for the passing of President George H. W. Bush. Next, a review of Philippians and a map of Paul’s mission journeys. We pick up with Philippians 1:15-18. How many times is the word, “Rejoice” used? Paul refers to his detractors. You’ll want to read Brant’s side-by-side explanation if the scripture. How does Paul display his Boldness and Confidence? How do WE live a Bold life? Sacrifice Submit Serve Suffer - remember these four words. Next, we begin Chapter 2. https://vimeo.com/304208482
Adelphi Class Dec 9, 2018 Dr. Brant Wallace, Philippians, continued
Lynn Larson gives the opening prayer https://vimeo.com/305570627 Brant begins with a review of Philippians. How does this relate to our Christmas season? Brant believes that verses 5-11 in chapter 2 are a great synopsis of the New Testament. Note: Brant’s wife and baby son (Alison and William) are in class today! Brant notes this is one of the few times that Paul writes poetry. In Paul’s writing is there conflict between Heaven and Earth? Next, since Paul has been writing about himself, he mentions sending Timothy to get current news from Philippi. https://vimeo.com/305570790
Adelphi Class Dec 16, 2018
Dr. Brant Wallace, Philippians, continued
Judy Canon gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/306902340 Brant reviews the history of Philippi. Next, we begin our study of chapter 3. How often does he use the word “rejoice “? What does Paul mean by saying, “We are the circumcision”? Paul gives his “resume” to validate his writings. How does the legalism problem of that time relate to the current situation for Christians? Brant uses an accounting example to explain the text. Does righteousness come from the law or from Christ? https://vimeo.com/306902573
Adelphi Class Dec 23, 2018 Dr. Jim Hamilton - Life is Messy: A Christmas Story - Luke 2:1-14 Cheryl O’Brian gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/308113829 What were some traditional Jewish values at the time of Jesus’ birth? What information is missing from the scripture? Jim tells a personal story about a friend who says she has lost faith in Christmas. Next, a quote from Chuck Colson. Randy Houston reads Luke 2:1-14. Next, Jim shows us the “order” of the Christmas story. But, is life about "order", OR is it "messy"? What do the other Gospels say about the Christmas story. Next, what about the contemporary Political scene of those times? A lot was left out of the Gospel. For example, how long would it take for a pregnant woman to walk from Nazareth to Bethlehem? Jim shows an old photo of the road. What did “Inn” really mean? So, although Jesus was born into a “mess”, it is very important to understand that God had a plan. What about today? Jim says that God’s message was, “I want to be part of your mess.” What are the messes in your life? How many people have peace in EVERY corner of their life? Answer: not many. What should we do with our messes? Jim has a suggestion. Next, Jim discusses Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem, “I heard the bells on Christmas Day”. Can WE have peace on earth? Next the class reads some scripture with Jim. https://vimeo.com/308113889
Adelphi Class Dec 30, 2018
Dr. Jim Hamilton The Hallel - Psalms
Ben Brumlow gives the opening prayer. https://vimeo.com/309328960 Since this is the last Sunday of the year, Jim wants to look back at the year. Psalm 136:1-6 Jim says this is a Hebrew word for "praise , and a root word for "hallelujah". Jim says this time of year should be a time of joyous thanksgiving. Jim goes to other scriptures to discuss (a) the miracle of feeding the 5,000 during which Jesus gave thanks (b) The Last Supper, during which Jesus gave thanks (c) Raising Lazarus, during which Jesus gave thanks. Jesus gave thanks to His father. Do you stop to say thanks? How did the disciples (and Jesus) sound when they sang? Jim mentions that the scriptures are silent on several topics that we might find interesting. Psalm 136 is about praise and was a "responsive" reading. Jim discusses the musical instruments of Biblical times. Jim leads the class in a responsive reading of Psalm 136. Jim says this Psalm reflects many things for which the Jews where grateful. Next, Jim shows us some Hebrew and how to read it. Jim explains some of the Hebrew words. Jim says we should thank God not just for what He does, but also for who He is. Our God is a God of love and mercy. Jim says this Psalm suggests that we give God thanks even in the bad times. How was YOUR 2018? What did God give to YOU during the last year? How can you be thankful for 2018? https://vimeo.com/309329678
