Adelphi Class 7-7-19 Dr. Jim Hamilton, Psalm 124
Donnie Martin gives the opening prayer. Do we take freedom for granted? Where would we be without our faith? Donnie says Psalm 124 is a plea from God to share His grace. Donnie reads a list of blessing from God. How can these blessing help us? https://vimeo.com/346727361
Jim describes his teaching style. (Jim says his teaching is “application” based). Next, he asks the class about times in our life during which we think “things are hopeless”. Jim says the answer is: You’ll want to depend on God through these times. Jim says we need to “get back to basics”. The class reads Psalm 124:1-8 with Jim. Next, Jim shows his chart about the 15 Psalms of Ascent. To whom is this Psalm attributed? Next, Jim asks us to think about a time we were completely dependent on God. When are we completely dependent on God? What three things does this Psalm affirm?
Jim says we should base our beliefs on the scripture. Does God rescue you when you are trapped? Jim finishes with a prayer to the class. https://vimeo.com/346788050

Next, Jim gives a verse-by-verse explanation. Is being a Christian like walking on a tightrope OR is it like sitting in a secure fortress? Next, what is the “saw-toothed” history of Israel? Jim gives more explanations about the individual verses. Who has the final word over God’s people? Death is a loss, but is it a tragedy? What about the wicked? Jim gives a quote from Charles Spurgeon: “The saints last forever, but their troubles do not.” Jim asks: “Who we should go to in times of trouble”. Jim compares “Works” and “Faith”. Jim asks us to refer to the scripture when needed. “By their fruit you shall know them.” Jim closes with a prayer for the class. https://vimeo.com/manage/348055033

What about “election” to choose Christ (or not)? Did Judas have a choice in his actions against Jesus? What about Calvin? We (finally) get to the introduction to Chapter 10. Paul’s desire is that Israel will accept Jesus. What is the context of this Chapter? Paul’s tone changes in Chapter 10. What message does Paul repeat? Is our transaction with God “eternal”? If so, does this mean our actions stop? Brant asks us to think about who in our lives needs to hear the Good News? https://vimeo.com/349661906
Adelphi Class 7-28-19

A class member asks, “In the Bible, who first recognizes Jesus?” (Satan). Brant says Paul is “putting things together” in Chapters 9-10-11. Next, verses 10:14-16. Who is “they”? Adelphi Class 8-4-19
Dr. Brant Wallace, Romans, Chapter 11
Donnie Martin gives the prayer with a thoughtful preparation before it. This is followed by the lesson from Brant on Romans, Chapter 11. Brant is involved in the Kyros Ministry inside prisons. This reminds him of changes that all experience and that we are experiencing now. There are changes in our church - - new pastors and other changes, while Luis Civallero, our scholarship recipient, is going through a season of change. Paul’s speech in this part of the chapter has changed to be less soft and more in-your-face. He tells Christians at the church in Rome not to be haughty because of their blessings. Brant reviews the outline of Romans. The main ideas in this part of the chapter: 1) God will gather Israel’s remnant. The 7 thousand Jews who did not reject God along with all the others will be given the opportunity to accept Christ. 2) Regathering - - the Lost Tribes will be gathered along with both Jews and Gentiles.
Paul uses the olive tree illustration from Jesus’ parables. God is the vine and Christians have been grafted in. When Israel comes to Christ she also will be grafted back to the tree. Our history as Christians is rooted in Israel since Jesus was a Jew.
All have experienced separation from God so we can experience his grace. It is truly a gift and cannot be bought. We can only be saved by grace.
Brant ends with two questions: 1) What do you need from Christ today? and 2) What does Christ need from us today? Video of lesson

Jim highlights verse 5, but asks us to read all six verses SEVERAL times this next week. Can your tears lead to joy? Jim closes with a prayer for the class and our new leaders.

This Psalm became very important as the Jews traveled back to Jerusalem after being released by Cyrus. Jim uses the story of Abraham and Sarah as a reference point. Next, Jim says these verses remind us of our responsibility to tell others what God has done for us. Which verses are in the past, present or future tenses? If we have “fresh” troubles does God have “fresh” mercies for us? Jim shows a drawing and some photos of the Negev desert in southern Israel. What does this parched land look like after some rain? How does this relate to God’s outpouring of love for us? Is God like a sudden stream in the desert or like a slow steady flow? What do you do in times of trouble?
